Eastern bluebird (Sialia sialis)

While the American goldfinch is a popular bird, the eastern bluebird doesn't get nearly as much attention from backyard birders.

And yet, it is one of the most beautiful and most beloved birds among birding enthusiasts. Its striking blue and white feathers and unique song have kept an entire generation of birders coming back every year.

The eastern bluebird is a unique bird to many people because it symbolizes home and family for them. These people tend to be the ones who come from families that moved around a lot as they were children or later on in life as they moved from their own homes into retirement homes.

The bluebird is the type of bird that these people have in their hearts, and they are just as committed to helping keep it around. These people are the ones who will go out of their way to look for nesting opportunities for this bird wherever they can find it.

This year, take the time to plan a visit to your bluebird nestbox. Simply mark the spot with a bluebird feeder card. Provide plenty of food in the box.

The eastern bluebird tends to nest in open areas, so don't be surprised if you see them nesting in your second story or attic! Nests can be large, so continue to provide extra food for these birds throughout the summer.
